Three Fundamental Precautions for Using a Dolly Trailer

Posted on

If you are planning on towing a vehicle or moving a large load in a trailer, use a dolly trailer. The dolly trailer is an unpowered haulage unit. This structure is attached to trucks or other towing vehicles during transportation. The goal of towing loads with this unit is to support the load and pull it without exerting weight on the dolly trailer. This type of rig minimises towing costs and maximises the use of a towing vehicle. If you are unfamiliar with dolly trailers, use these simple guidelines for efficient transportation.

Check the Connection

The connection between the dolly trailer and the towing vehicle will determine the stability and safety of the rig. Therefore, secure these two components with care. In general, the trailer coupler needs to be placed on the hitch ball. The security of the connection necessitates matching components. When the elements fit together, the coupler can be secured by tightening. As an additional precaution, tie up the hitched section using safety chains. These units are crucial for stabilising the trailer in case of accidental disconnection of the coupler.

Consider Weight Rating

The dolly trailer is not powered, and the structure cannot support and move loads. The weight of the dolly and the loads placed on it will be moved by the towing vehicle. Therefore, the dolly trailer load-bearing capacity is not important. However, the gross weight rating of the tow truck is critical. If the total weight of all the loads, including the driver and passengers, exceed the rating, the vehicle could sustain damage. Moreover, overloading the rig increases the risk of accidents. Avoid this problem by calculating the total weight of all towing and towed elements before setting up your rig.

Drive with Care

Considerable skill is required when driving a truck with a dolly trailer. The trailer is a simple add-on without exceptional performance characteristics to ensure control or safety. Therefore, if you are not cautious, the risk of losing control will be high. However, if you are cautious and diligent, the transportation process will be stress-free. When setting off, make sure that the haulage unit and the load are secure. Keep a low speed after setting off. Do not drive as fast as you do without the towing rig. Remember that sudden stops will be harder because the trailer has no independent breaks. Anticipate potential stops and brake early to avoid accidental collisions. Finally, remain vigilant when going downhill, and shift to a lower gear instead of riding your brakes.
